Raku Concentration

Raku Concentration
$515.00

Noah Heil will lead this specific month-long class to guide you in creating pieces designed to withstand the Raku firing process. This is not a beginner or demo-based class, you need prior clay experience and craftsmanship skills, including even wall thickness, proper compression, and precise slipping and scoring.

Dates:
The class meets once a week for 4 weeks (no open studio), with the intent to produce up to 6 pieces each for the final raku firing.

Making Sessions:
Thursday, June 4 | 6:00pm - 8:30pm
Thursday, June 11 | 6:00pm - 8:30pm
Thursday, June 18 | 6:00pm - 8:30pm
Thursday, June 25 | 6:00pm - 8:30pm
Location: Ovington Pottery

Raku Firing:
Saturday, July 11th
Location: Pete Syak Studio (Bloomfield, NJ)

If you make more than 6 pieces, we can fire the remaining pieces in our Cone 6 oxidation firing here at the studio. Bisque firings will take place at Ovington Pottery. We will glaze at the Raku Studio.

The first week of class will include a presentation about Raku as a firing process, surfaces and types of work that are successful in Raku firing. It would be best to come to the first day of class with some ideas as to what you would like to make - sketches encouraged.

Spots are limited to just 7 participants, this is based on firing capacity and Raku studio space.

Work for the Firing:
Works should be around 6" in size.  4 pieces are guaranteed to be fired with the plan to fire all 6 of your works but it very much depends on how the day goes. If you make work larger than 6", please plan to fire less than 4 pieces of work, larger pieces limit how much can be fired and the larger the piece the bigger the risk.

What is included in your class:
Clay
Glazes
Bisque Firing
Instruction
Raku Firing

Some things to note:
You will be a part of the firing. This means you will need to wear protective gear. If you are sensitive to heat, this is something to be aware of.
You should wear boots, pants, and cotton clothing.
You can change into pants there as it will be SUMMER and it will be HOT.
More details to come once we settle on the participants.

Logistics:
The Raku Day will be HOT, LONG and super EXCITING.

We should plan on a 10-hour day at Pete's studio.

We’ll arrive at Pete’s studio at 9am and he will fire and pull works from the kiln first so we can understand the process. After reviewing the results, we’ll decide how to glaze our pieces and spend the day glazing and firing.

Food:
Bring Snacks and Water. Once we figure out who is participating, we can discuss lunch needs.

How do we get there?
Noah and I will drive in one car with all the work. Leaving Brooklyn at 7:45!

We will need 2 other cars with 4 people in each to also make the journey. (Gas & toll costs will be split by your car mates.)

COST:
$500 + CC processing Fee
